Do You Want Unsubscribers?

Do you want your subscribers to click on the link at the bottom of your emails to instantly unsubscribe? You can get as many people as you want to leave your list –  It’s really simple – just treat people as idiots, and they’ll be happy to unsubscribe!

I just got an email from one of the lists I subscribe to, and the subject line read:

Receipt ID #33X47394JK993994V – Congratulations! I’ve been selected and PAID for  you to be one of only 50 other people who…

Now, one of the fastest ways you can get me to unsubscribe is to attempt to force me to open an email. A fake ‘receipt’ for example…

Here’s another example:

Confirmation #BTT-722J8C – If you have not seen this, then you need to go here right now … Click Here (very important)

If this is the only way you can get your emails opened – then you certainly aren’t providing any value to your list, are you?

PAYPAL – Admin@BenHolmesOnline.com – Hey, If it is your Paypal address then get ready to start checking the funds you’ll…

Are you starting to see a pattern here? Any headline that practically FORCES me to open it is what I absolute hate! I will certainly open it just long enough to click the unsubscribe button… and I’ll bet that I’m not the only one doing so…

I just got a new one… and yet again, this list owner just lost me as a subscriber – the title on this one was:

Your Account [Admin@BenHolmesOnline.com] Is About To Be Deleted

Now why did this idiot think that I’d believe my account was about to be deleted? Yes, I’m sure that there are many people who are not quite Internet literate who would instantly get worried that they were about to lose something.

I can give many more examples – but I think you get the point… writing an enticing headline can easily go too far when instead of provoking curiosity – you get to the point where you’re dishonestly hinting that their finances or accounts have problems.

Don’t do it!

You’ll get a fantastic open rate, I strongly suspect – and then you’ve lost whatever relationship you’ve built with that person. I realize that people need to put their best efforts forward – I know all about salesmanship and hype… but outright lies aren’t needed to get people to open your emails.

Don’t make this mistake!

Shoot for curiosity in your headlines, shoot for oddities, drive for the ‘weird’ factor, give a challenge, try to be different… or even hit someone up with just the straight truth…

But don’t lie to folks… they don’t like it.

P.S. Lie to me on a headline, and you’ll never get the chance to make any profit from me being on your list… what do you say?
